Apprentice Instructor Deaf-Blind Program
Summary
The Apprentice Instructor for the Deaf/Blind program is responsible for training dogs to be qualified Leader Dog guides and instructing qualified persons, who are both deaf and legally blind, to travel effectively with those dogs to enhance their mobility. Apprentice Instructors complete a three level training program to become certified dog guide instructors. An Apprentice Instructor performs all or most of the duties listed below on a limited basis, under supervision, for a period of time until it is determined that all skills can be completed independently and successfully.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Timely and effective completion of the structured apprentice program
- Train Leader Dogs to be responsible, effective guide dogs
- Instruct qualified Leader Dog students to travel effectively with a Leader Dog
- Assist with the selection of dogs for use in the program, ensure proper routine care, health care and maintenance
- Participate in evaluating Leader Dogs as they progress through training to class ready status
- Participate in planning and scheduling of training, matching dogs with students and class activities
- Maintain written and computer records according to established procedures
- Participate in field work involving travel as needed when assigned
- Participate in admissions meetings to evaluate new and reapplying applicants (when qualified and requested to do so)
- Participate in internal or external meetings and promotional activities as needed
- Assists with outside ASL vendor scheduling and quality assurance.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS) from an accredited four-year college or university and a minimum of one year of related experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education maybe considered. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or interpreter certification required. Previous experience and knowledge of animal behavior, dog training skills, teaching skills, and experience with Orientation and Mobility desired.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with employees and students.
- Must have fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of supervisors, co-workers, students and the general public.
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks.
- This position requires adherence to all applicable safety and health policies and procedures.
- Must have the ability to work shifts as assigned
- Must have the ability to travel when necessary, must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Basic computer skills preferred, familiarity with Microsoft Office products
- Must possess sound business judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties.
- CPR, health related training and valid chauffeur’s license will be needed.
- Must be comfortable with and willing to work around large dogs.
- Must be willing to perform general public relations duties on behalf of Leader Dog (perform tours, answer general questions, be a professional and courteous representative of Leader Dog, etc.).
- Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions with employees that promote positive teamwork, as well as with volunteers, donors, students and all constituents of Leader Dog. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
