Instructor Deaf-Blind Program

Summary

The Instructor for the Deaf/Blind program is responsible for training dogs to be qualified Leader Dog guides and instructing qualified persons, who are both deaf and legally blind, to travel effectively with those dogs to enhance their mobility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Trains Leader Dogs to be responsible, effective guide dogs
  • Instructs qualified Leader Dog students to travel effectively with a Leader Dog
  • Selects dogs for use in the program, ensures proper routine care, health care and maintenance of Leader Dogs in training
  • Participates in evaluating Leader Dogs as they progress through training to class ready status
  • Participates in planning and scheduling of training, matching dogs with students and class activities
  • Maintains written and computer records according to established procedures
  • Participates in field work involving travel as needed when assigned
  • Assists with Orientation and Mobility classes
  • Acquires and maintains a data base of all qualified outside ASL vendors and volunteers; coordinates scheduling
  • Insures completion of all applicable documentation for both paid and volunteer ASL providers.
  • Participates in admissions meetings to evaluate new and reapplying applicants (when qualified and requested to do so)
  • Participates in internal or external meetings and promotional activities as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS) from an accredited four-year college or university and a minimum of one year of related experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education maybe considered. Must have successfully completed an IGDF recognized Apprentice Instructor Program. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or interpreter certification required. Previous experience and knowledge of animal behavior, dog training skills, teaching skills, and experience with Orientation and Mobility desired.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with employees and students.
  • Must have fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and understanding of deaf-blind culture & communication methods.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of supervisors, co-workers, students and the general public.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • This position requires adherence to all applicable safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to work shifts as assigned
  • Must have the ability to travel when necessary, must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Basic computer skills preferred, familiarity with Microsoft Office products
  • Must possess sound business judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties.
  • CPR, health related training and valid chauffeur’s license will be needed.
  • Must be comfortable with and willing to work around large dogs.
  • Must be willing to perform general public relations duties on behalf of Leader Dog (perform tours, answer general questions, be a professional and courteous representative of Leader Dog, etc.).
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions with employees that promote positive teamwork, as well as with volunteers, donors, students and all constituents of Leader Dog. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
