Trekker Training
- Trekker Global Positioning System (GPS) is a talking navigational tool which:
- Prompts users with street names and turn-by-turn directions
- Announces current street locations, street crossings and vehicle speed while traveling in a vehicle
- Routes travel in unmapped areas such as parking lots, parks, business or academic campuses and bodies of water
- Saves points of interest along a route and detects them on return trips
- Leader Dogs for the Blind offers a free, week-long Trekker class for students who are blind and visually impaired and are safe, competent and independent travelers. Students must be physically able to walk several hours a day.
- Leader Dog offers free, week-long Trekker Summer Camps for teenagers ages 16 – 19, including a free Trekker unit. As part of the application process, teens submit an essay on “Where would you go if you had a Trekker?’.
- Leader Dog offers classes for professional orientation and mobility instructors to learn about Trekker and become competent in teaching Trekker use.
- A trekker unit is used in conjunction with a Leader Dog or a white cane. It does not guide or alert travelers of obstacles or traffic.
- Trekker offers relaxed travel, alleviating the need to memorize routes or ask for directions.
- A Trekker unit costs $1,740; a Trekker Breeze unit costs $940.
- Maestro Personal Productivity Software, which includes address book, calendar and e-mail, can be purchased for an additional $300.
- Trekker unit is 3.4” wide by 5.6” high by 1” deep, and weighs 1.3 pounds.
