Summer Experience 2011

Who says blind kids can't climb walls? Not us. Not them.

Leader Dogs for the Blind Summer Experience is a free, one-week camp experience for 16 and 17 year olds that is all about fun, learning new things, challenging yourself and making new friends. But most importantly… it's one week of strengthening your independence in new ways.

  • All services are provided at no cost to participants including air travel (certain travel expenses not covered).
  • 1:3 instructor to student ratio to ensure a personalized experience for all participants (maximum of 20 participants).
  • Participants have their own room with bathroom, TV and mini-fridge.

We have filled all 20 spaces in this year's Summer Experience. If you'll be 16 or 17 in 2014, you can apply for our next camp, June 20–27, 2014, starting in August.

Our Experience

Be yourself. This is a place to be physically active, learn new skills, share experiences and hang out with new friends in a community designed just for you.

Try something new. You'll be outdoors, climbing rock walls, kayaking, riding a tandem bicycle—we'll literally have you swinging on ropes.

Enhance your skills. Not only will you have the chance to live and work with a Leader Dog, we'll give you a new Kapten PLUS GPS device and teach you how to use it. When you leave here, your Kapten PLUS goes with you so you can practice your new travel skills at home.

Develop your leadership ability. Learn how having a can-do attitude, learning about others and focusing on having fun can make you a great leader.

Room & Board

You'll stay in the residence facility on our beautiful campus in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Boys and girls reside in separate areas of the residence and are supervised by Leader Dog staff.

Leader Dog covers the cost of housing, meals, activities and travel. Participants may bring pocket money for souvenirs.

Note about meals: Dietary requests/restrictions accommodated.

Safety

We are committed to offering a safe environment where you can have fun and push your limits. All activities are designed to ensure the safety and the well-being of participants.

The Leader Dog Summer Experience is licensed by the State of Michigan.
