Common Leader Dog Commands

A Leader Dog guides the person who is blind and visually impaired, but the person is still in charge of directing the dog. Here is a list of commands the dog guide user gives his or her dog.

  • Sit
  • Down: Lay Down
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Around: Leader Dogs usually walk on the left side of the person. The command “around” tells the dog to move to the right side.
  • Forward: Start walking
  • Right: Turn right
  • Hup-up: Hurry
  • Steady: Slow Down
  • Straight
  • Find the...: Tells the dog to find objects such as the door, chair or curb.
  • Leave it
  • Follow: Tells the dog to follow a person in a store, for example
