The team of James Ryan and his Leader Dog Claire were perfect candidates to receive a personal GPS navigation device. James saw immediately how "amazingly helpful" it can be for so many people who are blind and want to navigate freely. The GPS comes loaded with maps and points of interest, but James' favorite feature, is that he can say, "Where am I?," and his GPS will tell him.
It didn't take Laurie Scott long to fall in love with Gavin, her eighth Leader Dog. From the moment they met, he has barely left her side. "When we're not out traveling, Gavin's favorite position is sitting next to me with his head on my lap," says Laurie. "He has such a gentle nature. As a matter of fact, he often falls asleep sitting up, because he doesn't want to move away from me."

Each month, a new group of clients arrives at our campus to learn the skills that will enable them to travel, work, shop and live life independently ... some for the first time ever. Ultimately, their Leader Dog companion will become their eyes—and in some cases, their eyes and ears.
The courage and determination of our clients is inspiring! For many, coming to Leader is one of the greatest challenges they've ever faced. Some have never ventured out into the world alone. Others have never known the companionship of a dog, much less considered trusting their safety to one.
Also inspiring is the unwavering dedication and affection shown by our expertly trained Leader Dogs to their visually impaired partners.
When a client leaves our campus after an intensive 26-day training session, they leave with a canine partner who is dedicated to their safety and mobility. It is a relationship that will be built on trust, love and teamwork.
