Edward T. and Ellen K. Dryer Charitable Foundation

Listen to Article

The Edward T. and Ellen K. Dryer Charitable Foundation has generously supported Leader Dog since 2005. Edward Dryer lived and worked in Detroit his entire life and lost his sight suddenly while on a business trip to New York. Upon returning home, he lost his job as a result of his blindness.

Despite the difficulties he encountered, Mr. Dryer remained independent and began investing in the stock market. “His wife would read him the Wall Street Journal each day,” said Jon Gandelot, president of the Dryer Foundation. “Mr. and Mrs. Dryer lived modestly and managed to amass some wealth through their investments.”

Mr. Dryer also became an advocate for the blind and visually impaired. He was instrumental in convincing corporations to publish their annual reports on tape.

Seven years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Dryer passed away within four months of each other and the Dryer Charitable Foundation was established. The Foundation’s mission is to aid people who have limited sight and to aid in research for the prevention and cure of blindness.

“Leader Dogs for the Blind is a wonderful organization and the Dryer Foundation is delighted to support their work for the blind and visually impaired,” said Mr. Gandelot.

(The Dryer Foundation contributes only to pre-selected organizations and does not accept applications for funding.)
