Are You Ready for a Guide Dog? Assessing Your Readiness
Leader Dog’s guide dog applicant standards are based on the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF) Applicant Standards. Ask yourself the following questions to determine if you are ready for a guide dog.
- Have you been declared legally blind by an eye care professional, or do you have functional vision loss that requires use of a primary mobility aid?
- Do you meet the eligibility requirements listed above?
- Can you comfortably walk for at least 15 minutes at a minimum pace of 2 mph?
- Do you walk to destinations by yourself with a white cane? Does your routine include regular outings for work, school, errands, or exercise multiple times per week?
- Does your daily routine include at least two regular walking routes (15+ minutes each) used at least five times per week, with at least one being outdoors?
- Can you handle the sudden movements of a large breed dog?
- Are you confident in your orientation and mobility skills, able to navigate routes independently, problem-solve, and use safe street-crossing strategies without relying solely on technology?
- Are you prepared to train and work with a guide dog long-term, using positive reinforcement techniques, providing ongoing care and advocating for both you and your dog?
- Do you have the relationship skills to build a strong bond with your guide dog and serve as the primary caretaker, providing daily physical and mental stimulation beyond guide work?
- Is your home environment safe for a guide dog with adequate space and free of aggressive animals, pests and harmful substances like excessive smoke, chemicals or clutter?
- Can you provide for the physical and emotional needs of a working companion including the financial resources for a commercially available complete and balanced kibble dog food diet, toys, vaccinations, medications and veterinary visits (about $1,500 annually)? Are you willing to accept the Leader Dog veterinary staff’s recommendations on the diet and healthcare of your working guide dog?
- Are all household members comfortable having a dog in the home and willing to follow basic guidelines for the care and behavior of your guide dog?
You must meet these minimum standards. If you are unsure if you meet one of these, contact client services.
