Written by Mike Kondrat, Leader Dog Community Engagement Volunteer
As a community engagement volunteer, I have the privilege of introducing the Leader Dogs for the Blind story to community members who might not be familiar with our history, mission and the profound impact we make in the low vision community. Over the past couple of years, I’ve presented at scout meetings, churches, schools, civic organizations and corporate events. The reaction from people I meet is often one of genuine surprise, discovering what Leader Dog does, how we accomplish it and why our mission matters so deeply.
By educating others about our work, the community engagement team helps create new ambassadors, attract volunteers and inspire donors – all essential components for organizational growth and sustainability.
I was initially drawn to the community engagement volunteer position because of its unique responsibilities and how well it aligned with my background. My experience as a client driver volunteer, interacting directly with Leader Dog clients, has provided me with personal stories and insights that bring authenticity to my community presentations.
What makes this role truly special is the opportunity to work alongside other dedicated volunteers, receive guidance from our skilled and personable Leader Dog staff, and of course, spend time with our remarkable dogs. This combination creates an environment of cooperation and education that generates not just organizational success but deep personal fulfillment.
I genuinely cherish my role as a community engagement volunteer. The opportunity to educate others about our mission and contribute to positive change in people’s lives provides the motivation that makes this position truly rewarding.
