The freedom our Leader Dogs give back to their human partners is truly amazing. But the costs of providing 17 months of care, professional training and veterinary services add up quickly.
That’s why we’re so grateful for our partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation. The foundation was established under the philanthropic direction of award-winning actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise, who has been an advocate of our nation’s defenders for nearly 40 years.
With the support of the foundation and compassionate friends like you, we’ve been able to provide guide dogs to veterans for over 70 years. Veterans like Wayne, a Navy veteran who lost his eyesight to a degenerative disease.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is privileged to have served veterans from all branches of the U.S. military and first responders including paramedics, firefighters and police officers.
After serving in the Navy as an aviation technician on the USS Coral Sea, Wayne Sanford learned he had retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease. Before being diagnosed as legally blind at age 44, he worked in quality assurance on the space shuttle project at Rockwell International. A state agency referred Wayne to Leader Dog for Orientation & Mobility training, and he returned to receive his first guide dog, Otto, in 2023.
